The Women in Distress (WID) mission is to provide victims of domestic violence with safe shelter, crisis intervention and resources, and to educate the community in order to Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) through Intervention, Education and Advocacy.

WID provides services and classes for victims of domestic violence: survivor individual and group counseling for men, women, children and same-sex relationships; female anger management; parenting skills; self esteem groups; life skills training and more.  Shelters are also available to women and children who escape from an abusive environment. Clients feel secure while they obtain permanent housing and legal, medical and employment assistance. Residents of the shelter do not pay for housing, clothing, and non-perishable foods, and are provided with group counseling, domestic violence education, parent effectiveness training and financial management. Male survivors of are referred to an appropriate shelter specific to the needs of men.

Other Ways to Help:

  • Plan an Event: Raise funds by planning events such as fashion shows, luncheons, golf tournaments, etc.
  • Cell Phone Campaign: Sponsored by Shelter Alliance, a cell phone recyling company, WID raises more than $30,000 annually through the collection and recycling of used cell phones.
  • Sponsorships: Become an Impact Partner or support a WID Event.

  • Endowments: The Community Foundation of Broward manages two endowment funds that provide the treatment and education programs in Broward County.
  • Planned Giving: Planned Gifts may be in the form of bequests, life insurance, qualified retirement plans or real estate.  They contribute to the future strength of the institution and enable WID's staff to carry forward the work and ideals in which you believe.

  • Donate Your Car: Facilitated through Charity Cars, donations to WID are for a participant who is in need of transportation.
  • Volunteer: Areas to volunteer are Speakers' Bureau, 24 hour Crisis Line, Child Care, Data Entry, Thrift Store/Merchandise Sorting, Educational Fairs, Event Committee/Auxiliary, Filing/Clerical, Donated Professional Services
